Senator Diane Savino of Staten Island, NY - Yesterday, The NY State Senate voted down gay marriage with a 38-24. Of course, this gave me the sads, because I was hoping that if it passed, I could put in my video application to be Rojo Caliente and Cynthia Nixon's flower gay at their wedding. Maybe next time. So anyway, boo to the vote, but yay to this speech Senator Diane Savino gave.

The clincher was the part where she talks about being a Roman Catholic. And about the power of the churches. I ALWAYS use that logic. My husband and I could not have gotten married in any church we wanted too... and we are a heterosexual couple. But if you take away their ONE money making hook, ie, the ability to feel superior to someone, well, you take their power. And to them, civil marriage rights = legitimacy. And we can't have that!
It's all bullshit. GLBT bigotry is the last socially acceptable for of hatred. Get a religious or political leader to go on the news and say "I think (Asians, Jews, Disabled, Women...) are horrible, and yet I have to love them..." and they will be run out of town. No so with the LGBT community. They somehow get a pass and a shug with "well, that's what their dogma dictates, whatcha gonna do?" It's maddening. And unacceptable.

Wow, incredible speech. I'm just floored. I hate that this is even an issue in today's world. People need to loosen the fuck up.
I applaud this woman for her courageous speech, hers is a great and articulate way to explain the real issue at hand. I even thought she was gayelle, but apparently she is not, which makes it even more admirable for her to take this stand. Too bad the majority of bigots around her do not think the same way, and NYC (the supposed capital of the FREE world) is still a place where real equality for all citizens doesn't exist. I am sure the guy behind her who stood up and left has a mistress or likes to tap in public restrooms...that is mostly the case with all these senile hypocrites.
In a country like the US where there is separation of Church and State, religious beliefs should have no part in the passing of laws. Period.

Hell, I'm a Republican, and I loved her speech! Of course, I've been pro gay marriage for a while (which I suppose makes me more of a Libertarian).
Thankfully, my generation (X/Y) is much more open to the idea of gay marriage, meaning one day gays will be able to get married and it won't be a big deal. At least, I hope my kids think that one day.

This is why more women need to speak out and become vocal in politics. Women are 51% of the population. Yet we do not have anywhere near 50% representation on the political stage. This is slowly changing.
She is right. Little girls are trained to think about weddings. Maybe if we taught little girls to think about politics, economics and civics, instead of white dresses and invitations, we would move forward. Because really the future is here. That is why so many people are angry. The status quo is changing.
People who happend to be gay pay the same taxes as straights. They live in the same USA. This is their country too. They contribute to the work force. They contribute to society. We have no right to say their love is wrong. Why is it wrong? Becasue the Bible says it is? Who wrote the Bible? Who decided what parts to put into the Bible and what parts to omit? Wish they were here to explain their motives.

I was surprised -and red-faced- by this because I assumed NYS already allowed gay marriage. Equality, human rights and basic decency aside, the additional benefits IN THIS ECONOMY of passing this into law would have made too much sense.
First of all, her speech kicked ass! Second of all, we should absolutely never leave the rights of humans up to a vote. If we did that during the Civil Rights era, blacks would still be riding in the back of the bus in the south. Sometimes the heads of government have to step up and do what is fair and equal for all of its citizens. When will the U.S. realize that?
Her speech was awesome. She's a smart woman who stands by her friends and supports them. Not too many politicians do or say what she did. Some of the state senators who turned it down were democrats who's party recieves loads of funds and contributions from the gays. Always nice to see how gay money is good enough to get elected but gay equality is easily shrugged off. Diane Savino needs her own float at NY gay pride.
