Mah Hero
First the PUPPIES (see below) and now this! Just when I thought I had successfully hardened the black crust surrounding my heart by watching 2 episodes of Keeping Up with the Kardashians back to back, this video of Mah Boo helping a young boy in Haiti landed in my inbox (Thanks Jon).
During a looting at a supply store in Haiti, a boy was hit in the head with a rock and was bleeding pretty badly. Mah Boo immediately dropped his serious journalistface, flexed his biceps and carried the boy to safety away from the crowd. It's like if Superman was a giggly silver fox who spent his days off watching The Real Housewives. And since I'm always thinking about Bonnie Tyler songs, an acoustic version of "Holding Out For A Hero" played in my head while watching.
And now the hardened crust around my heart has completely shattered. Leave it to Mah Boo.

Michael K, I will fight you to the death for Mah Boo, b'c that was hands down the COOLEST FCKING THING I have ever seen a human being do.
And, AC being a famewhore? Whoever the FUCK said that, eat my left one. The man is HUMAN. You see any other celebs down there helping? Nope? You see Katie Couric or Diane Sawyer down there pulling people out of the rubble? Fuck you and your ignorance.
Anderson, I love you even more than I did before.
. Also, hiv can only infect a very few, very specific types of cells, & these cells are not found in the upper layers of the skin.
--------------------------------
If you go back and look at what I said, Anderson MAY have put himself at risk if 1) the child had HIV and 2) if he had any open wounds, scratches. Considering where he is right now, there is a possibility he has scratches on his arms. I personally would not have risked it. I know many nurses who also wouldn't risk any contact like that unless they are gloved and protected on other areas of their skin.
Yes, HIV goes through changes the minute it hits the air and leaves the body, but it is not rendered harmless the minutes it hits the air. This was fresh blood, since the boy was actively bleeding. I wouldn't risk it, and neither would most medical workers I know. I am a biologist. I worked in a lab for several years studying transmission of viruses (at Wash Univ Med School in St. Louis). I never would have done what he did, but I commend him for doing it.

Wow, is it 1987 already?!
There has never been a single case of someone aquiring the HIV virus through oral sex. Not one. I sincerely doubt that your friend is going to make history by becoming the first. While it is theoretically risky, in the real world of HIV transmission it just doesn't happen that way. Not only is saliva not infectious, but it also has over a dozen elements & proteins which very effectively prevent the transmission of viable HIV.
-------------------------------------
He got it from GIVING oral sex, which is still oral sex. He didn't get it from someone performing it on him. It is not spread through saliva. Use your brain. He gave oral sex, and got HIV through mouth contact with the other man's semen. It can and has been spread that way, and my friend is not the first I am sure.

You can't get HIV through giving or receiving hickeys. There is no direct blood contact involved! A hickey is a bruise and you can't get HIV from touching/creating/hell, licking a bruise.
--------------------------
Most hickeys are not bruises. You can actually taste the blood because small amounts are coming through the skin. I'm talking about a serious hickey, of course. I wouldn't risk it with someone if I knew they were HIV positive.

Also found this on Medhelp:
Someone has a cut and was exposed to someone else's cut. This does not pose a risk for many reasons. First, the skin serves as a barrier to the virus. The skin is comprised of several layers, and injuries, like paper cuts, etc...begin healing immediately from the inside out. Therefore, even if there IS a superficial abrasion/laceration, it will not allow the virus to penetrate deep enough to reach the bloodstream, which is what has to happen for infection. In a very severe scenario, there may be a risk....for example, two people being in a car accident with large major hemorrhaging injuries where there is huge exposure to the other person's blood through a very significant (deep) injury. However, again...being exposed to someone else's blood in small amounts, even with a small cut, will NOT place you at risk.

While it is theoretically risky, in the real world of HIV transmission it just doesn't happen that way. Not only is saliva not infectious, but it also has over a dozen elements & proteins which very effectively prevent the transmission of viable HIV. Same thing applies to hickies. Sucking anything on anyone's body is not a risk for hiv infection, & it doesn't matter if there are cuts. The only confirmed means of sexual transmission of HIV are unprotected vaginal & anal intercourse.
And Anderson could’ve been dripping in fresh, HIV+ blood & still wouldn't have been any risk whatsoever of becoming infected in that manner. HIV is a fragile virus. It's not transmitted on surface objects such as food, furniture, clothing, hand to hand, kissing, rubbing against someone and any number of other ways people seem to worry about needlessly. There are other blood-borne illnesses out there, ones that can remain infectious in the environment. Hiv isn't one of them, no matter what a paranoid public may think. As I’ve already said, Hiv is a very fragile, difficult to transmit virus that is primarily transmitted INSIDE the human body, as in unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse where the virus never leaves the confines & protection of the two bodies. Once hiv finds itself outside the human body, small changes in temperature, & moisture & pH levels all quickly damage the virus and render it unable to infect. Also, hiv can only infect a very few, very specific types of cells, & these cells are not found in the upper layers of the skin.
Studies which show the fallacy of relying on anecdotal evidence as opposed to carefully controlled study insofar as HIV transmission risk is concerned:
Page-Shafer K, Veugelers PJ, Moss AR, Strathdee S, Kaldor JM, van Griensven GJ. Sexual risk behavior and risk factors for HIV-1 seroconversion in homosexual men participating in the Tricontinental Seroconverter Study, 1982-1994 [published erratum appears in Am J Epidemiol 1997 15 Dec; 146(12):1076]. Am J Epidemiol 1997, 146:531-542.
Jenicek M. "Clinical Case Reporting" in Evidence-Based Medicine. Oxford: Butterworth–Heinemann; 1999:117
Saltzman SP, Stoddard AM, McCusker J, Moon MW, Mayer KH. Reliability of self-reported sexual behavior risk factors for HIV infection in homosexual men. Public Health Rep. 1987 102(6):692–697.Nov–Dec;
Catania JA, Gibson DR, Chitwood DD, Coates TJ. Methodological problems in AIDS behavioral research: influences on measurement error and participation bias in studies of sexual behavior. Psychol Bull. 1990 Nov;108(3):339–362.
They were also proper studies which followed serodiscordant (poz/neg) couples for years - one study went on for ten years. In the couples who used condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, but no barrier for oral activities, not one of the negative partners became infected with hiv. Not one.
Here’s an entire lesson on how HIV is & isn’t transmitted:
http://www.aidsmeds.com/cn/printView.php?page=/articles/Transmission_996...
All that aside, you are right about HIV being transmitted through breastfeeding. So you can at least take comfort in that, I guess.
You can't get HIV through giving or receiving hickeys. There is no direct blood contact involved! A hickey is a bruise and you can't get HIV from touching/creating/hell, licking a bruise.
http://www.medhelp.org/posts/HIV-Prevention/Theoretical-Risk-or-Actual-R...
If you were biting someone, that would be an altogether different thing.
Just an FYI for the uneducated: the major blood borne disease that everyone is terrified of, HIV, is not transmitted in this manner. Anderson would've had to have had a giant, gaping, blood-gushing wound on his body to even be remotely at risk for contracting HIV from this bleeding child, & a large amount of the child’s blood would’ve had to have entered that wound.
The 3 ways HIV is transmitted are: unprotected vaginal or anal sex, drug addicts sharing needles, & from mother to unborn child.
If people were more educated about HIV then perhaps it wouldn’t have such a horrible stigma attached to it, & people like Anderson Cooper wouldn’t get criticized for helping an injured child.
-------------------------
Maybe you need to get more educated about HIV. It passes easier than you think, and it is stronger than previously believed. If Anderson had a scratch on his skin and the child had HIV, Anderson COULD be infected. Anderson does not need a gaping wound for it to enter.
Scientists have also found evidence that HIV CAN be spread by breastfeeding (it has been documented).
Vaginal or anal sex only? Wrong. It is also spread by oral sex. It has been documented, and I know a man who contracted it through oral sex (with another man).
Don't forget hickeys. Teens are being advised not to give hickeys. If you are actually sucking the blood through someone's skin and they have HIV, the HIV is coming into contact with the mucous membrane of your mouth. It's risky.
No matter what you think, Anderson put himself at risk because HIV is so widespread there. I commend him for helping the child, but I'm scared for him as well.

Very heartening, and not at all surprising-Anderson is the real deal. I had not heard about Dr. Gupta manning the hospital all by himself, another courageous and deeply humane person.
People looking to donate might want to check out Partners in Health, a great organization that was already working in Haiti, and out of the devastation zone, so they are in a good position to hit the ground running.
It's easy to forget that if you have food, health and shelter you are among the very top percent of the world's wealthy. At least it is for me, I need to remind myself often when I am furious about something like weak coffee (yikes).

Mawy, I admit when I first saw the story I wondered if MK would run with it and was surprised that he did. At first. But we all know MK means no harm and he was coming at it from a humorous angle. IMO, him posting it allowed people who might not look at news sites to see what is really going on, and possibly they will take action for having seen it. In a situation like this, MK can't win. Some people will be offended that he posted it and if he hadn't, some will be offended at that. For me (and only me) I choose to take it at face value and not try to analyze why it's on DListed. The bottom line is it's MK's site and if any of us are offended then we need not look at this thread. :-)
Okay, enough proselytizing from ole Roo. Imma gonna schlep to the kitchen and get me some grapes.

I think this is one subject that MK should have left alone. There was nothing funny about that video. It brought tears to my eyes. I agree with others who said what a great guy Anderson was for doing this. It's true, people like him are sadly very rare nowadays. Most people are only out for themselves. If more people did things like that, the world be a better place. I think everyone should donate to the Red Cross at least $5 or $10 if they have it. It's an extremely sad situation down there. A friend at work has family down there and he knows of 2 relatives that are still alive, both hurt. If they do not receive treatment, he fears that they will die.

Just an FYI for you there are many more diseases in this world than AIDS and I am aware that AIDS is not transmitted this way, which is why I did not mention it. Hep C is, as are many, many other diseases hence my use of "blood bourne disease." Great, Mr. Cooper, brought tears to my eyes.
Some people commented he exposed himself to AIDS, but it's not like that, he would have to be injured as well, with wounds or cuts to his skin, in order to be in danger of infection.
And if you see a boy caught in the middle of a street row, what do you do, you leave him there to be trampled over? He did the right thing, very courageous, kudos to him.
May the people there find peace and hopefully Anderson Cooper will come back in one piece to finally meet the lovely Michael K.

Mah Boo is one fine person! I watched this clip live and what Andy did was very brave. And I think he got his camera back.
For all the privilege he was born into, Anderson like a very compassionate, down to earth person. I would like to think most people would do the same thing, but from just a few, much less dire situations I have witnessed here in the US, they probably wouldn't. I often wonder how journalists capture some of the things they do without getting involved. I wonder what their 'rules' are regarding such involvement.
10 or so years ago my husband surprised me with a vacation trip to the Dominican Republic. For those geographically challaged, the Domincan Republic is the other side of the island from Haiti. The island is half Haiti and half Domican Republic. My husband was all excited about this beautiful resort we were staying in. Sure, it was gorgeous, but leave the gates of the resort and it's a third world country. Very poor and shacks for homes and children begging in the streets. I felt awful about locking myself behind a gated resort with so much suffering going on outside. We had planned to spend alot of money doing stupid shit like para-sailing and crap, but we didn't. We took some kind of bus tour that had alot of stops and, not that it helped much, but gave our money away. We couldn't resist those poor children, tugging on our clothes begging for money. My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary a few days ago. We had saved some money to go away over Valentines Day weekend. We thought back on our experience with our trip to the Dominican Republic and instead donated our trip money to the Red Cross. We are so spoiled here. Our problems are so minor compared to so many, like the Haitian people. It's hard enough to live in an impoverished country, but to have a horrible natural disaster like this is just unimaginable.
Thank you to those like Anderson and Dr Gupta and others that go to places like Haiti to help people and my thoughts and prayers to the people of Haiti.

To all of you making fun of the boy, of Mah Boo or of the situation

Did you actually READ the comments???
TEAM FOOD POISONING! Staying at home today...!!!
Seeing that there are still some people left on this planet who are selfless and put others' needs before theirs makes me believe in humanity again.
Unfortunately, those people become rarer these days as everyone prioritises themselves....
Thumbs up for Anderson!
And we know that he won't have any problems with carrying MK over the porch on their wedding day....
Are we even human's anymore?? What the fuck is going on in this world that we are on this facebook, internet shit and government's who have everyone's money are killing the poor. We don't even stand up for anything anymore. American's are not doing shit for all this bullshit in Afghanistan and Iraq. We look like rapid dog's. I'm disgusted.
To all of you making fun of the boy, of Mah Boo or of the situation - let me tell you something: back in 1945, when Americans came to rescue all of my ancestors in south Germany, nobody laughed, nothing made fun, nobody was just typing or writing silly comments of what happened then.
Me as a German am still very glad of those American boys who went to Europe to help as during and after WW II. Though being a child back then, my mother can only tell the best things about Americans helping German (Bavarian) people. Without your ancestors, she might have not survived the war - just maybe this little boy might have not survived. So please stop acting like fools and take up the spirit that still many of your fellow Americans still have. Be proud, but not arrogant. Thank you.
"Teenage Haitian boys with head trauma?.... Anderson must feel like he's in a candy store!"
I was disgusted by this comment made by someone on another forum i visited. Plus the boy didn't look like a teenager. Disgusting.
