Vanity Fair: The Pretty White Girl Issue
Every year, Annie Leibovitz shoots Vanity Fair's "New Hollywood" issue and this year's cover makes a BYU class picture look like a Benetton ad. I mean, couldn't they have thrown Gabby Sidibe (DUCK!) in there? Or Manny from Modern Family (I'm dead serious)? Or Mimi's Precious moustache? Or shit, they could've slapped a wig on John Cho, slipped him in a Stepford Wifey gown and put him up there.
Anyway, here's the lovely ladies who made the cover. From left to right above: Carey Mulligan, a sad lesbian clown, Abbie Cornish, Mia Wasikowska, Amanda Seyfried, Rebecca Hall, Emma Stone, Evan Rachel Wood and Anna Kendrick.

I have dark hair and a very pale, nearly flawless complexion. I’m active outdoors year-round so I wear sunblock to prevent premature aging and skin cancer. In the summer, I spend my days on the water and prefer a natural, lightly, sun-kissed complexion. Apparently, taking proper care of my skin must be a devious scheme to accentuate my whiteness too. :/
I won’t bother reading the balance of this thread because I have already seen too many ridiculous stereotypes about beautiful women with complexions spanning the spectrum. Liking/disliking a person based on their outward appearance, gender, sexuality...whatever...ad nauseam... denies the richness of humankind and human experience. It’s your loss.
And Vanity Fair's loss too!

"I'm a little appalled at the racism exhibited here against white people. There is nothing at all wrong with being born white, just like there's nothing wrong with being born any other color.
Would you bitch and complain if it was all Hispanics?"
--------------------------------------------
Like that would EVER fuckin happen. When have you ever seen only people of color on the cover of Vanity Fair? And for the record, I can think of several up and coming actors of color.... Keke Palmer, Jurnee Smollett, Zoe Saldana, Joy Bryant, just off the top of my head.
And the real fucked up thing is that this shit is released on Black History Month. Wouldn't it have been a nice tribute if the actors I mentioned had been showcased instead, or at the very least included. Oh well.

Anna Kendrick is actually a Tony award-winning stage actress. So she has had a significant career acting, just not in films, hence her part as "new Hollywood".
**************************************
IS, thank you for responding...I had no idea and just couldn't understand why she was included based on just one movie and the Twilight connection-good for her!
Amanda Seyfried is the only one on this cover that I like and that isn't giving a blank stare.
As far as them all looking the same, yeah they kind of do. But then I started to think, if you were to put other young non-white actresses on this cover, who would you put? I wouldn't want to put someone just for the sake of them being a minority, I'd want to put someone just as talented with as big of names as the rest, someone that didn't stand out for their heritage but blended in for their talent. So I started to look up young actresses and I realized that in fact a lot of them are white. That's just how it is. So really the problem is with the industry people and who they let in and promote. You see a few minority actresses but they often get the supporting role or are the token minority.
Modern Family, for example, has Sofia Vergara (I wouldn't consider her a young actress at this point, but this is just an example) playing the Latina trophy wife. And yet, they had her dye her naturally light brown/blonde hair dark so that she could look "latina"...even though light brown/blonde IS latina. Her part is all about being outrageously hispanic when in fact a lot of hispanics in the U.S. have greatly assimilated to the U.S. culture.
So I wouldn't peg it all on Vanity Fair, though they could have included slightly different looks too (Lea Michele from Glee has a distinctive nose and would have helped diversify the group as an emerging actress, despite also being white).
What an absolutely boring cover.
Couldn't they at least have added Zoe Kravitz, Selena Gomez, Gabourey Sidibe or Devon Aoki?
Heck, even Mila Kunis or Megan Fox would have rocked this cover.
It would be definitely nice to see some more variety, but I blame it all on Vanity Fair, not these lovely ladies.
I like them all, even the ones I've not had a chance of seeing their work yet.
With exception of Sad Lesbian Clown. She seems like a really nice, if not stale, stoner, but is bad at acting.
Mulligan is my favorite though.
I used to get annoyed at everybody telling me how great her performance was in 'An Education' and then I finally saw it and, yup.
This makes me laugh, because I know both Hayden Pissaliere and Kristen Bell will look at this and scream: "OH MY GOD AMANDA SEYFRIED AND ANNA KENDRICK HAVE TOTALLY (AND RESPECTIVELY) APPROPRIATED OUR CAREERS, WTF." Also, how the hell did Rebecca Hall end up in this bunch? She's much too smart AND a bit too old for this company.
And as another of my friends once quoted, "Why do the white girls always have to take it so hard?"

That argument seems like it would be right but you have to wonder who is promoting the notion of white features as beautiful. Is it really people of color because they find these features more rare? Personally, I think these rarer-featured people are probably in more control of the money (in the US, but even globally) so it would be they who control the industries that propagate this ideal, whether maliciously or not.
All blah ...

Sshhh we can't state the obvious anymore, it's racist towards white people now. We have to pretend like the cover is fair and not purposely excluding anyone of color. Maybe no one will notice. Business as usual.
_____________
I don't know that the publication is necessarily *purposefully* excluding anyone of color as much as if they if they had included someone of color, they would *purposefully* INcluding them -- i.e., being purposefully politically correct. IMHO, these publications are pretty much headed by white people and marketed towards white people and this is what the publishers are genuinely interested in (genuinely think is beautiful or promising) or they genuinely think their readers are interested in. So I actually think this cover was made in earnest. (I'm optimistic that way). Do people of color read this magazine? Sure. But I have always felt that, generally speaking, people of color have a greater capacity (probably due to necessity) to live in two worlds -- a dominantly white-focused world and the other, more focused on their specific existence defined by color, language, class, religion or whatever. And I'm not saying that all white people are the same or that white people are unexposed to rap or salsa music, don't like spicy food, and don't read Alice Walker and adore Toni Morrison. I'm also not saying that non-English speaking immigrants would be perfectly at home sitting down with your average WASP soccer mom or that all "minority" children from the ghetto believe they can make it out...
wow, I just completely lost my train of thought. I had a point but you'll have to trust me. Anyway, this cover? It's pretty boring. I only recognize 4 of the names and the 4th bc isn't Abbie Cornish the one who's hooked up with either Ethan Hawke or Ryan Phillipe? BYU comment, very funny.
If you think about the entire population of the world, white complexioned people are probably a minority compared to the prominence of yellow, brown, black, red complexioned people. Blue and green eyes and Elizabeth Taylor's violet shaded eyes being rarer still compared to brown eyes. So, perhaps white skin and light eyes being the rarer shades/colors with regards to the worldwide population are considered more desirable simply because of the rarity factor. Most things that are rare in this world are likewise prized (doesn't always make it necessarily right). Does rarity always mean beautiful? No. I've seen some ugly ass rare gemstones.
That being said, America is supposed to be a diverse melting pot of cultures and genetic color spectrums and the media should recognize that a little more often in this day and age.
OMG that is so much pastel. I just wanna run through it squirting a bottle of ketchup.
i only recognize one chick in this whole lot...and i don't care if this is the vanity fair snow white issue, but couldn't they have atleast put snooki in there? she would've classed this cover up!

I think everybody knows that traditional racism places whites above others.
But that does NOT mean that it isn't racist to make disparaging comments about these girls and their skin color, which a lot of people here have been doing. Yeah, they're white. Yeah, VF is being racist by only including whites. Doesn't mean it's okay to sneer about their skin color or act like somehow whites aren't as attractive/varied as any other group, or possibly even more varied since "white" skin ranges from uberpale to light brown.
I wonder how long it will take for these bores to be in the same has-been pile as Lindsay Lohan? Anybody got a pool going?

Hmm, that remark bugs me. So, what you are saying is that all middle class white women are identical in experience, thought, attitude, behavior and beliefs and therefore an actress from a white, middle class background can just play herself, because they are all the same person? Because a person is white and middle class they cease to be a unique human being? Isn't that the same sort of gross generalization as saying all blacks love watermelon, all Italians are mafioso and all Jews are greedy?

Oh wait...now I'm reading that this covered is recycled from others, in that the same actresses have been "new" a couple of times:

damn talk about upper class bitches. im bored just looking at this cover.
Well now that I read that Zoe Saldana (sp?) was on the inside flip of last year's cover (lol), I don't know whether to complain as much, but what about Freida Pinto, and to add some further diversity even within the white girls, Lily Cole?
Maybe VF is just telling the truth, and that "New Hollywood" is going to be vanilla.

Soo weird, Carey Mulligan has been around for ages in Britain, acting well in period dramas like 'Bleak House'. So she cuts all her hair off and is a star?!
I dunno about representing black/hispanic actresses..but what about some avatar shit? That blue would work well with the pastels. I'm thinking that's how Leibovitz plans her photos anyway.

I'm a little appalled at the racism exhibited here against white people. There is nothing at all wrong with being born white, just like there's nothing wrong with being born any other color.
Would you bitch and complain if it was all Hispanics? If it was all black girls, how many of you would come here and say there are too many black people and there must be an evil conspiracy afoot? Now ask yourself why you think it's ok to say that about white people.
----
Your first paragraph makes sense. Can't say the same for the second paragraph at all. While there is nothing wrong with being born any color, there is still such a thing called racism in the world, non?
Typically, it i.e., racism, has placed whites above all others. When a magazine featuring a slew of up and coming actresses can only find actresses with ivory skin as their subjects (I don't give an Eff if they are part-cherokee or whateva), that speaks to something larger.
If it were all Hispanic women on the cover or if the cover was comprised entirely of any other non-white race, it would have been a GD anomally, and VF would have made a big friggin deal about how "progressive" they were.
How can you not know this?
Wake up & Smell the Coffee.

It's not about racism-the point is that there isn't enough diversity on the cover-there's not only white actresses in Hollywood-there a Hispanics, blacks,Asians,Indians etc... The magazine should have shown that there is SOME diversity in the industry by adding one person from another ethnic group.IT would have saved VF the backlash it's about to get.
Lope, maybe this video will explain why people feel there should be a concerted effort to improve ethnic diversity:

The annoying friend girl from Twilight?! I thought she looked familiar in the previews for Up in the Air...I shouldn't judge, because I didn't see that film and perhaps she was fantastic...but it's a surprise to see that she is considered "new Hollywood"...shouldn't she do a bit more (she was super annoying in Twilight, but maybe it was the direction?)? But that's VF, prematurely announcing who the next It girl/s is/are...
All I see is WHITENESS!
When I look at this cover all I can think of is "My Fair Twits". For those of you who like the Twilight Zone (the original) re-watch "#12 Looks Just Like You". Scarily accurate...
Evan Rachel Wood...there I said it.
