Smile Like You Mean It
The same amazing Japanese TV show that brought us the Columbo dog and the pussy with brows continues to report the important news. They bring us this story of the dog who smiles like she just took a loooooong hit from a joint. I know she's most likely growling at those dumb bitches for chaining her to a pile of crap, but let's just believe she's smiling. Let her owners believe it too so she can continue to lure them in her with "smile" and then bite their finger tips off when they least expect it. That's what they get for keeping her prisoner in front of a junky ass garage.

Aww that made a shitty work afternoon beautiful. That smile is hysterical, does look like he took a hit though. Too cute and too smart, dogs rock.
I dont think that dog was beat or hurt, its very healthy, yes the ears do go down, but maybe thats just how he/she reacts while doing that? I guess we will never know, that is a chinese dog though, maybe shibas do that, Ive never had one, I know they are very smart. Im sure she would cower and she doesnt look like she's scared, other than the ears down thing, but like I said thats how she/he may react when seeing owner.
GOD FORBID, He's a slaughter, please dont say that, I know they do that there, but I hope thats not the case, that is a beautiful dog.
The chain is crappy, but maybe while he's at work with the owner, she/he has to stay on the chain to prevent them from running away?
This video will now stay on my mind and bother me.
Cause I'll never know.

OK, IMO I trhink that dog is adorable, is not cringing and her tail is wagging, obvious love. But she is also kind of a bitch for making fun of her master's eyes like that.

ahahahahahahahaha!!!! The chain kills me too, but you can see she ADORES her owner!

Its a Shiba Inu. They are known for their shit eating grins. Go over to YouTube and search for 'shiba smile'. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=shiba+smile&search_type=&aq=...
And the reason it's on a chain/leash is because they all run away. Its rare to see one in public NOT on a leash. Cute as hell, but if you want a dog that will come back when you call it don't get a Shiba.
As soon as i saw the dog "smile" i thought something was wrong. She's not smiling, she looks like she's in pain. Poor thing. She's a nice looking animal, and the "smile" is kinda cute, but c'mon people, the chain, the ears back. Not fun. I hope someone local reports this and that lovely dog is taken care of by someone/organization who cares.
If the dog IS indeed smiling it's probably cuz she was spared being slaughtered... this time. Poor thing. Sad.
The dog looks like he has been tortured, and is squinting his eyes in anticipation of being hit.
Abused dogs make similar squinting face when humans walk up to them. This man probably slaughters dogs, as they often do in China, and spared this dog for a little while because of the face he's making. But I'm sure this dog has been cooked and eaten by now.
I hope the sick bastard get Sars or the Plague.

I have an idea.............chain that son of a bitch up! Let's see how he likes it! Ignorance is dangerous however, knowledge with no responsibility is even more dangerous. This asshole fits that to a tea.

Yes, that dog is not smiling, it is afraid of getting beaten! Look at it shaking! If it were happy to see her master, her tail would be wagging freely, not hesitantly.
I'me with KD - the dog is scared.
Tex Perkins.
Google him you dumb fuck!
aww. she's so sweet! she needs a yard to run & play in! mean ole owners.

That dog is so flashing the "I suppose I should humor these assholes" smile.
I think the dog was pulling to much on the chain, that's why her face was in agony and we misinterpreted as a smile. :)
That's actually a healthy looking Shiba. The chain is short so she isn't run over in the garage. I've seen people lock these babies up in their apartments and they are never socialized. Webcam, pleez!
Chinese Japanese
thats a dog abuse
it looks cute but when I saw that chain....cmon you have to be a complete moron not see that the animal is neglected!
If he wanted to smile like that, he would do it without a damn leash
and don't give me that not trained shit..if he can smile he can sit
but that dog is straight up neglected , starved or abused
Gross

Yeah, I'm not so sure what is going on with that dog. The "smile" looks cute but the squinting of the eyes, and the ear position, makes me wonder if she is bracing herself in anticipation of a smack.
There is a bit of tail wagging so I hope I'm wrong.
She also doesn't look comfortable when the woman is petting her.

WELL, I've lived in Japan for 4 years now and the Shibas are EVERYWHERE...The Japanese culture has certain breeds that are kept outside and certain breeds that are house dogs. alot of places have the guard dogs tied or chained like that because they are GUARD DOGS. If someone they don't know gets to close...trust you don't want to do that! The Japanese people tie them but they are not abused they walk them for hours feed them and love them. perhaps not like some that have the dogs living in the house, laying in the same bed as them, and generally taking better care of the dogs then some of the kids, but they are taken care of.

Me no like the chain. Makes me sad cause my Bozo is free to run all over our house.

Okay, the jury's out on whether this dog is scared. I don't like that chain. His/her coat looks good. I hope there isn't worn skin around the collar or I WILL COME AFTER THEM!
Don't forget to watch the Puppy Bowl this Sunday(and Kitteh halftime)! They also have bunnehs! Yes, I'm teched. I loves my animal friends. Peace y'all
You know, I'm testing one of my dogs right now, and everytime I approach him he folds down his ears in anticipation of my scratching his head like I normally do, so who knows? Maybe that dog is absolutely fine...

Remember, the early bird may catch the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese...
I choose to believe that the length of the chain is hidden behind the wall. Shibas & Jindos curl their lips when they smile as much as they do when they sneer. The ears sticking outward is an indication that the dog is uncomfortable, but it could be because of the nearby crowd and camera crew.
I have to agree with everyone who said that dog is probably scared; she was much more happy looking at the end when she had her tail up high. The "smile" seemed more of an act of submission. However, my dog gets a goofy look on his face like that if you rub his belly or scratch him in a spot he likes, so they DO smile sometimes when they're happy...

It may not be animal abuse, but believe the people that are saying that that is NOT a happy dog when it sees it's owner. It's a fear response. You can tell by the ears being down, the wagging low tail.
We don't abuse our dog but she'll still "smile" and squint her eyes and do exactly what this dog is doing when she knows she's done something bad and got caught.
I know this has been said by others, but it bears repeating...Many dogs "smile" and it is not necessarily a fear response. Baring of the teeth, raised hackles, stiff legs may be a fear/agression response, but my 1 yr old rottie smiles all the time and he is babied like crazy-never been abused. He freaking smiled for his pic with Santa because the photog's assistant was holding up a treat for him to have right after the photo.

I've volunteered for a couple of years at the SPCA and we take courses from amazing animal trainers before we're even allowed to Walk the dogs. This dog is afraid. You can tell by it's ear position, (down and back), and how it's trembling and squinting it's eyes. It's head shy, as if it's been smacked upside the head before. I will say that other than that and the fact it is leashed with a chain that is too heavy and short that it doesn't look underfed. I'm conflicted b/c the smile on that dog is so damn cute.

I was afraid to watch it, based on some of the comments. I don't handle animal abuse videos well at all. I didn't want to be in tears this evening! I'm glad I watched it though! I am more of an expert on cat behavior and communication than I am about dogs but this pup did not seem to be unhappy or uncomfortable to me. His other body language seemed to suggest he was happy and he wasn't baring his teeth at all. In fact, he looks rather well kept and loved!
Looks like the dog is in pain when he/she smiles. Sure it isn't though ...

There are some real dumbasses here. Chinese? They ate the dog?
Aside from being ignorant, those are some OLD cliche jokes, why even bother!
The dog is great and I highly doubt she's abused since she's sitting calmly while the owner rubs her chin in one scene.

I totally agree with you. Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese...NOT THE SAME PEOPLE, people! Very different countries/cultures. Do some research, read a book, try traveling outside of the U.S. for once and experience it for yourself. I don't think the dog has been abused. Sorry, I just don't see it based on the behavior. There's a difference between cowering and acting calm/happy to see your owner. Also, there are such things as leash laws y'know. Would you rather have "smiley" out running loose in traffic? Have you SEEN how crazy Japanese traffic is? Sheesh. I enjoy most of the people that post here but DAMN, those were some ignorant comments...kinda surprised me actually.

That dog is abused. He's making that face in anticipation of being hit. Sick bastards.

Exactly. I used to have a dog who was abused before I got her and that's what she did if I raised my hand to reach anything. :(
That poor dog is trying to look cute so the owners don't eat her.

CUTE! :)
My Husky makes that smiley face whenever I pet him, and he's not even on a leash.

A lot of dogs make that expression. It's a "submissive" gesture for a dog. It actually isn't a sign of happiness. It may not be abuse, but I get a little uncomfortable that his owner is holding the green leash ( rope?) as he approaches the dog. Dog is afraid, but where some dogs may immediately roll over to show submission ( my dog does) some might "smile". But the dog looks very healthy , so I don't think he's mistreated. Very cute.
I don't get abused animal vibes at all from that dog. I don't even understand why some have suggested that. Leashing a dog like that doesn't seem ideal, but far from an abused dog.
And no, they don't eat dogs in Japan. Yes, dogs are eaten in China, Vietnam, Laos, and maybe a few other eastern countries.
