The 2010 Oscar Nominations
The Oscar nominations were announced this morning, and this year there are 10 picks for Best Picture. This means that they will have to set-up folding chairs in the parking lot outside of the Kodak Theater for all the damn nominees! Chicken Cutlets still better be the premiere seat filler INSIDE the theater.
There's really not that many surprises. Sandra Bullock and The Blind Side (FOR WHY?!!!!) both got nominated. Tilda Swinton, who was dripping in white trash glamour in Julia, did not. Neither did Julianne Moore. But everything else was pretty much business as usual. The only nomination I truly give two hard shits about is MO'NIQUE'S!!!!!!!!!! Nobody can drop an analog TV down a stairwell like she can!
Picture her doing this while watching the nominations (instead of the watching The $10,000 Pyramid) this morning:

The academy finally did right by Mo'Nique! We all know she really deserved an Oscar statue for her work in Phat Girlz, so this is the academy's way of fixing their WRONG. Better late than never.
Here's some of the nominations for the main categories. Avatardy For The Party and The Hurt Locker (Ouch) got the most nominations with 9 each.

lmao, Avatar reminded you of Ferngully, too? That is all I could think of when watching it. Esp with the big evil yellow rainforest muncher. I really hope someday they come out with a cgi remake of that movie.

I didn't get to see "Precious" yet, but I love Gabourey Sidibe. She is such a smart and funny girl. I love her attitude about herself. Such a good role model!

Precious was the best film of 2009 and I liked Up in the Air, but Clooney was just playing himself..again.
YAWN.....
The 2010 Oscars are snoozeworthy.
Did they forget Public Enemies because it was so early in the year and they all have the attention span of a two year old these days??
Sorry...but Depp's performance blows away any of these nominees.
and Bale deserved a Supporting Actor nomination.
I guess it's just a Ferngully Dances with Smurfs year.
"Avatar" is a summer popcorn movie with a big budget ad campaign cunningly released during the "serious" movie season. It doesn't belong in the running.
In a similar way, "District 9" is a prawn out of water in both Oscar contention and how deep it tried to be while shoving its foot in its mouth/down its throat at the same time.
"The Blind Side" escaped from the Lifetime network. The screenplay also leaves out some of the dirtiness of the real story in order to make Bullock's character the Selfless White Woman (tm) out to save the world. Might have been a better movie if it'd been more about Oher.
As much as I love me some QT, "Inglorious Basterds" was kind of dull. I also think that it's proof his cheese has slid of his foot-fetish loving cracker. If he hadn't made such a big deal about this being his opus, it probably would've fallen off his list of "officially" directed things.
Clooney is bent on showing us he can act...by playing the same character over and over. Worked for Julia Roberts, right? I bet he thinks an Oscar will make us collectively forget "Batman and Robin" or his stint on "The Facts of Life."
I guess the "up" in this is that "Star Trek" didn't make it in. This could be a matter of practicality: there's no venue on Earth big enough to contain the Cameron and Abrams smug at the same time.
-------------------------------------------------
Are you gonna bark all day, little doggie, or are you you gonna bite?
Avatar...prolly going to win but District 9 and
Inglourious Basterds were really good.

Sandra Bullock FTW! I think she's great. The Blind Side was an awesome movie.
Pene got nominated for Nine?
I would've thought Marion would've been nominated instead.
I predict a year of surprising wins across the board.
Having not seen most of these films, I'm going to go with - Up (Best Picture); Reitman (Director); Jeff Bridges (Best Lead Actor, but I think Clooney might get it); Streep (Best Lead Actress); Tucci (Best Supporting); Gyllenhaal(Best Supporting); Nick Hornby (Best Adapted Screenplay); Tarantino (Best Original Screenplay); The Milk of Sorrow (Best Foreign); and Coraline (Best Animated).
Hope Precious & all involved make a clean sweep of the Oscars.
Sandra Bullock and The Blind Side (FOR WHY?!!!!)

My theory is that if you hang in there long enough, you'll eventually fall ass backwards into an Oscar nom. Usually, they wait until you have one foot in the grave (Christopher Plummer--I'm looking at you), but this must be the new hip fun Osacars!!
((eyeroll))
I hate all awards shows. The whole beginning of the year is one endless circle jerk of awards shows. Talent has nothing to do with this shit (see the Grammys).
Ok, enough pontificating, I need some liquor.

Ever watch the episode of south park when they made fun of clooney's oscar speech? It was a cloud of smug. The Oscars are a joke.
Oh, I forgot to say.
THIS YEAR'S NOMINATIONS SUCK! For the most part...

Thank you, luscious_t. I'm so glad someone called the truth out on this fucking made-for-TV movie bullshit about the Great White Hope (this time a woman) saving some poor ass person of color.
Bullock CAN'T ACT!!! I wish people would stop confusing her "charming" personality as a talent.
I liked that line so much, luscious, I'm going to make it my tag line for a while.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Oh shit, I've seen UP too.
Cute movie, loved the animation, good story line:)
and Coraline (it was ok)
and i've also seen The Princess and the Frog (good classic disney animation but story line wasn't as fantastic as it could be)
I'm almost embarrassed I've seen more animated films then adult films..hehehe..I'm a kid at heart what can I say..
I have only seen 2 movies out of all these movies so I can't really form a well rounded opinion about this but from what I have seen I will say that
Inglourious Basterds I liked. I didn't love it, and I have seen much better films come out of Quentin then this but it was ok.
Up in the air, was THE most BORING film I have seen in a looooong time. It bored me to tears, I do not understand why anyone thinks this was a good film. It was TERRIBLE. It was worst then terrible, I don't even understand why it is being nominated. I was falling asleep by the end of it, and everything about it was so predictable. Just not my type I guess.
OMG, I wish I could be a fly on the wall in Gabourey Sidibe's house. HER FIRST MOVIE---BEST ACTRESS NOM!!! I am pulling for an upset!!!! If she gets this, losing the other awards won't mean shit.
Monique is probably celebrating calmly somewhere. I know Monique will get this.

Glad there are some sane District 9 fans here. I posted in some random blog something so mild like "I didn't like District 9" and serial masturbators everywhere started to freak out while having seizures: 'WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU, DISTRICT 9 IS THE BEST MOVIE EVER. THERE HASN'T BEEN SOMETHING SO GOOD IN DECADES, YOU'RE JUST A JELLIZ H8R AND I CAN'T WAIT FOR MY STAR TREK SPECIAL EDITION DVD YAY AND FUCK YOU AGAIN'
*************
Um, that movie was OK. It actually put me in a bad mood and I don't even know why!!! Can't believe it was nominated.

Damn, Gabourey Sidibe is up for an oscar, is young and not on the cover of Vanity Fair???!!! She better get invited to the fucking party. And Evan Rachel Wood is? For what? Her stellar turn as a woodenly acted lame ass vampire? I mean, I could've done that part better and with more subtly. Wait, is she screwing a Weinstein?

Just heard "old school" producer David Brown has died at 93. Thanks for "Jaws", "The player" and numerous other fab flix. I guess now it's all up to the money counting Coca Cola executives, as in "Avatar". Makes me sad and angry.
BTT: the "art direction" nod to Sherlock Holmes is ridiculous. It's all CGI!

All the films you mentioned are on my list (not yet shown in Germany). If this is your liking you have to see "The white ribbon". It's marvellous, simply compelling (gasp). The brilliant b/w cinematography got nominated too.
Meryl and Georgio gave fun performances but nothing AA-worthy. Guess I'll go for sex on legs Jeff Bridges, haven't seen this film yet but I'll pretend it's for Baker Boys if he gets it.

I LOVED the Hurt Locker, though I had my fingers in my ears the whole time (I'm chicken). I wish Bigelow would win and give a big SUCKIT to her ex-husband.
But prob won't happen. Hollywood is too grateful for all the money Avatar made.
Feh. The Oscars aren't for what, another 2 weeks? I'm already over all the hype.
And what's the thinking nominating 10 films for best picture, but only 6 best directors?? Makes no damn sense.
Avatar - good CG, but I've seen that story before and done better
The Blind Side - haven't and won't
District 9 - inventive, raw, good story - almost runined with the "there's the sequel shot" at the end
An Education - not yet
The Hurt Locker - nope
Inglourious Basterds - surprisingly dull
Precious - must see
A Serious Man - seriously?
Up - yup
Up in the Air - Clooney speaks

don't kill me, but i liked Up in the Air. Clooney usually annoys me but i could tolerate him in this.

Don't get me wrong - it wasn't a horrible movie. Just not very good - I can't believe it would be up for an award. The biggest award I could give it is "Not Bad".

Gabby won't be able to escape that...no one does. I was just pondering the arc of a possible career, that's all. Let's hope she has a long and happy life, show biz has a nasty habit of eating people and spitting them out.

Gabourey Sidibe is the Haing S. Ngor of 2010. Remember him? He won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar back in 1984 for "The Killing Fields" and promptly dropped off the face of the earth. While I enjoyed her performance in "Precious", she seems doomed to the same fate somehow. Gabby is kind of like the hugely obese Darlene Cates in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?", memorable and now vanished. Let's hope Ms. Sidibe has more staying power.

I won't kill you. I liked Up In The Air too... I feel those roles are simply Oscar-bait and could be delivered the same way by any other actor, it wasn't a monumental effort.
The movie was good, but I don't really know if it's worthy of so many awards. Reitman was raised in Hollywood so it's expected that he'll shoot Ellen Page taking a dump and get a nomination for it.
Clooney and Kendrick were okay but not standouts, I do like Vera Farmiga, though. She deserves the recognition, it's a pity she didn't get it for Orphan.
Tilda Swinton....what happened? Julia was friggin' FANTASTIC. That's so not swag.

Thanks for the updates. Just observing that certain chosen actors can only fill one role, are rewarded, fawned over for a few months, and then forgotten, which is often a real waste of talent. Let's talk about that Oscar Harold Russell got for "Best Years of Our Lives". Did he deserve it or was it just a pity vote? Will Gabby get work once her spotlight goes off? Will those blue aliens from "Avatar" find work in light romantic comedies?

Haing S. Ngor died in his 50s and did work up until his death as an actor. He was also a physician before the Cambodian war.

Darlene Cates wasn't an actor at all and was only cast for her sheer obesity. Even after stomach-stapling surgery, she gained back all her weight plus some.

I don't get it. Did they really think that all 10 movies warrant an Oscar nom?? They could have easily narrowed down that list to 5, like in other years. IG and D9 gone. Boom. 2 down, 3 to go.

Gabourey should win. That is the role of a lifetime, she became totally different person. Yes Sandra's role was cute, but I don't think the focus required or difficulty level comes even close to a movie like Precious.
District 9, it was okay to good, but oscar worthy, hmmmm...
I am sorry but Avatar was just good, I am not fucking having wet dreams about it or anything. It was just a typical action flick with an old storyline. The special effects is what took it to another level. It should win visual awards, but I don't think the main ones.
Need to rent a lot of the others. Marathon this weekend!

Sherlock Holmes' RDJ probably wonders why when Johnny Depp chews up scenery it means nomination and when he follows it does not. RDJ has a statue though, no?
---------------------------------------------
He got a Golden Globe for Sherlock Holmes. But he doesn't have an Oscar, IIRC. I remember he was nominated for Chaplin back in the day.
Provolone,
Clooney looks like Frankenstein to me. I've never understood the sex symbol status thing with him. (Or pretty much anyone else in Hollywood, for that matter).

I am basically just so happy that Brad Pitt wasn't nominated for Inglorius Basterds. I won't have to see Angie's smug kisser shining out from the front row again. Maybe the academy is tired of those two, cuz I sure am.
