Hot Slut Of The Day!

Coco (as played by Charles Levin), Dorothy's gay houseslave who was only in the first episode of the Golden Girls. Coco was supposed to be a series regular, but they dumped that queen in favor of Sophia. It needed to be done, but I still would've liked to see Coco's ass stick around for just a few more episodes. That way we could've seen him massaging Dorothy's bunions, holding Sophia's purse and hitting his brains with a frying pan while listening to one of Rose's stories. And I would've taken screen shots from each of these scenes to Photoshop my head over Coco's. Oh well. I'm sure Coco ran off with Monroe Ficus from Too Close For Comfort and now they are running a bed and breakfast together in Amsterdam.

Here's Coco at work:

Absolutely Coco was shit

Yes, I know that they were pilots. I know that the Rita Moreno ep. became Empty Nest. I was talking about at the time, when I was young, without hindsight.

I was mainly annoyed because I didn't want an ep. of the GG taken up by these stranger neighbours, I wanted to see the GG that week.

Coco was the shit!!! Wish his ass would've stuck around past the pilot. Still the best show ever, though, batch!

Gaza Strip's picture

The first episode was the PILOT, filmed several months before the rest of the Season 1 episodes. Thus, various differences in set, people, etc. It was made to sell the series to the network, which in turn made requests of its own, when the pilot went to series.

The Rita Moreno episode was the original PILOT for "Empty Nest" - established series are often used as a launchpad for unrelated (or barely related) new shows. It was far more common in the 60s - 80s, than today. With that show, only the set remained intact, and one actor was given a different role (Leisure). Well, and the lead was still a doctor.

Oh my god. I have the same hand held mirror as Blanche @ the 5 min. mark. 80's!

I was thinking last night that I can't believe that two are gone and that Betty White is 88. I can't believe it! Makes me sad.

I really didn't like Coco at the time and I still don't like him. He had very few lines and there was just no chemistry. This episode is the ONLY episode of Golden Girls I don't watch.

This show was such an integral part of my childhood, I got the entire series as it became available on DVD. Seriously, nothing makes me happier than watching Golden Girls with my little sister; it takes us back to the 80s when things were simpler.

It still bothers the shit out of me that the exterior of the house doesn't match the interior and the set can't physically accomodate the bedrooms in the house.

I grew up with my grandparents and my grandma and I would watch this show together. I forgot how much I loved it. It brought back lots of great memories of my childhood, thank you so much!!!! ::runs off to watch more episodes on youtube::

megank's picture

I agree, him being a recurring character would've been fun but Sophia was the best choice. I think she's my favorite.

This made my day. Seriously. Shit like this is why I love Dlisted so.

I was also confused by that Rita Moreno and her family next door episode.

@ the fly

That was actually the pilot for Empty Nest.

it didn't make sense for them to have a houseboy anyway, they lived in a normal house w/ 3 people.

Oh my, I remember Coco and this episode when it originally aired! I kinda wish they would have kept him AND Sophia together.

There was also an episode featuring Debbie Reynolds. Rumor has it that she was going to be signed on as a Golden Girl, but then backed out.
~~~~
Yeah. That was the episode Stan was going to remarry Dorothy and Rose hooked up the doorbell to the barking dog alarm. Good times.
I'd have to say Sophia was my favorite.
thank you for sharing the overwhelming joy that IS the Golden Girls. you made my day Micheal. Spread the Gospel, girl!
Supertramp - you're right, it may just be nostalgia but there really aren't that many good sitcoms anymore. I watch "The Big Bang Theory" sometimes but that's about it for me. I do have a lot of Golden Girls on DVD though.
they don't make TV like that anymore. I miss the old days of television.
I'd completely forgotten how funny The Golden Girls were. Thank you for the reminder MK!
One of the funniest G.G. moments is when the three go to Sophia's hairdresser and they all wind up with Sophia's Do.
LOL, Eduardo!! *adds another gay to the list*
Supertramp- yes, that is a great episode, when Rose and Blanche are sitting with that novelist. Blanche is all, "All those waves!...I had to take a Dramamine to get through Chapter 3!"
My favorite Golden Girls episode is the one with the snooty novelist that becomes Dorothy's best friend. Watching Rose and Blanche tangle with the novelist is priceless!
Oh, and the episode when Rose and Sophia break Blanche's "Miss Magnolia" dish - funny!
The Fly's picture
I would blame Anita Bryant.
Awwww, Coco! While it might've been cool to have a house gay around, at least some other gays filled little holes here and there (no pun intended), like Blanche's brother Clayton and then later his "special friend" Doug, the bitchy wedding planner ("Well excuse me, Anita Bryant!"), Dorothy's lesbian friend Jean. One my fave moments when Dorothy and Blanche agree to be on Wake Up, Miami as two women who live together......
The appearance, disappearance and reappearance (rerun) of Coco confused me when I was young. When I bought into this shit more I was wondering why the girls fired him. A gay cook is a funny idea when you think about it.
I was also confused by that Rita Moreno and her family next door episode.
Blanche's accent isn't as pronounced in the first episode.
I used to stay up late watching Too Close For Comfort reruns on school nights. Explains a lot.
This is gay.
Ricki, There is usually also at least one orange/rust/autumn colored outfit per episode. I usually also watch to see which tablecloth is on the kitchen table. There were two main ones that they seemed to switched back and forth.
When I was just a toddler, Phyllis was on a lot of commercials and TV shows. I called her "Ha-Ha" (I assume because of the way she laughed). Josephine the Plumber was a fave too.
LOVED Coco! It was too bad they cut him. They could have always had Coco AND Sophia, after all. Anyway, love this show. Every time my friends and I watch we always play the Golden Girls game, which is to predict who throughout the episode will wear yellow. There's always at least one yellow outfit per episode haha. Oh Florida in the late 80's/early 90's. What an era.
Producers wanted the show to focus on the relationship between the women only. Smart move. It was always better when Sophia cooked.
Sophia: "Do we have any rum?"
Rose: "Oh, you making a rum-cake?"
Sophia: "No."
tojo's picture
I expected his voice to be a little...er gayer.
It might have been interesting to keep him on the show even if they did bring in Sophia.
That show was a lot funnier in my memories...
