I am pregnant with my first child. I am going to be 30 two months after I give birth. I waited until I was married, finished with my education, and done with my partying before I had a child. It was not that hard. My mother had me when she was 19 and single. She never stopped her partying ways, they stopped her. I knew I never wanted to be like that. I was raised by my grandparents (thankfully), but I am living, breathing proof of what kind of damage is done by a mother who is incredibly selfish. I had to go through a lot to get where I am today. It may be the old fashioned thing to do, but I did not believe in having a child until I was married, and at least one year into the marriage at that. I am not looking down on anyone's decision to have a baby out of wedlock or anything like that. As long as you are there for your child, realize that your life is no longer yours, then you are doing a good job. I gave myself a decade to mess around, party, and be selfish. Like one poster said, I too had my time to shine. Now it is my daughter's turn. Thumbs up to all you hardworking, caring, loving mothers out there!! I strive to be as selfless as you.

Now that I'm a parent, I totally get it: you want a kid? You're going to have to sacrifice for one. It's not about you -- not your cute maternity clothes, not your baby shower, not your post-baby return to partying, not your goddamn "tribute" tattoo of the baby's silly name across your torso. It's about the kids 150%. My marriage, my job, my home, my everything -- I work twice as hard to maintain it all for my son. He's the most important star in my sky, bar none, because he represents the future. I've had my time to shine and now it's his turn. That doesn't mean I don't take care of myself or enjoy social time. It just means that those things are lower in my list of priorities now. And my husband feels the same way. Family is first. Dropping a grand at the MAC counter, trolling for dudes, and drinking at clubs -- not on my list.
These kind of selfish people are an insult to hard-working, caring parents (esp singlecparents!).
