The Skateboarding Owl!
Tony Hawk better keep his wheels moving, because this owl coming after his ass! Alby the Owl has become somewhat of a local celebrity in Folkstone, Kent because his crazy owner claims he loves nothing more than to feel the wind under his wings as he skateboards around town.
Alby's owner Brian Maxted, who also runs an owl sanctuary in town, says the Tony Hawk of owls discovered his skateboarding talent at a shopping center one day. Brian regularly takes Alby and some of the other owls out to drum up donations for his sanctuary. One day, Alby was chilling out when a boy with a skateboard came by to say hi. Crazy ass Brian claims Alby perked up and jumped on the boy's skateboard.
The story at The Telegraph says that Alby's skateboarding skills have gotten so advanced that he swoops onto the board using the momentum from his flight to push him along. Shit sounds impressive, right? Well, look at this hilarious video below of Alby's skills.
So "swooping on the board" = "standing on a skateboard that's being pulled by a ratty string." Brian needs to stop freebasing bird seed and Alby needs to practice more! Hoo hoo's crazy? YOU ARE, BRIAN!
But seriously, I'm still impressed with Alby's skills, because I don't think I could do that. After about ten seconds, I'd get bored and jump off to go eat a string cheese or something.
And I still think Alby needs to star in a remake of Gleaming the Cube.

Completely off-topic and a day late but I just had to acknowledge my father's birthplace - Folkstone, Kent, 1917. The story is interesting only because he would have been born in London like his ancestors but for WWI and the Kaiser dropping bombs on London from zeppelins. The ill and the pregnant were sent to the seaside for safety. Bad times for all and my father and grandparents were put on a ship back to Canada before the war was over only because my now shell-shocked grandad had emigrated before the war started. If not for that awful war I would not be born which has left me perplexed about the costs of war. This is of no real consequence but MK can always use another hit. One of these days I will overcome my fear of the OP. "For this relief much thanks"

The guy obviously loves the owls and seems to care for them quite well.
The skateboarding thing is him just getting pulled around but I don't think it's causing him any harm and he can fly off whenever he wants. I would just think he'd do it on a flatter surface so he's not hitting all those bumps!

Some of the birds might have vision impairments and can no longer hunt at night. Some of them came from places where they were being kept in cages by people who couldn't/didn't care for them anymore. If you think about it, Barn owls are given their name because they tend to nest in barns and other man-made structures. The skateboard thing is weird, but he is just pulling the board.

Yeah, but are they released once they are healed? The guy brought up how owls in captivity live longer, kinda justifying it, but if they can't live in the wild then they should at least have them in something better than cages.
Maybe the owl was willing to do it to relieve the soul-crushing boredom he faces in the cage.

FYI, the article said Alby's 13 years old... wild barn owls max out at about 8, so Alby's a very old bird. I wouldn't want to spend my senior years performing in what's basically a circus act. That's just me though.

The Folkestone Owl Rescue Sanctuary provides a refuge for owls that are injured in the wild or can no longer be looked after in captivity.
This non-profit organisation was started in 1989 by Brian Maxted (below right), and can provide space for up to 50 owls all of whom need care and attention.

I'm tossed up on this one. On the one hand, the man seems to genuinely love his birds and he's... helping (?) them.
On the other, I don't think that owl knows what the fuck it's doing, and it's being exploited by a crazy man. I don't think it's being abused, but I'm sure the owl would rather be staying up at night, hunting worms and mice.

I agree with you on most everything, except that they eat larger critters than just worms and mice. I'm not sure about this one type of owl (Barn, if I'm not mistaken), but owls are responsible for depopulating households of their bunnies and cats. But by no means should an owl be kept in captivity. I'd rather see Darwinism play out than this shit.
Adding: You're probably right, Hekki. I just saw the picture again. He's a little guy, so he can probably only handle mice. I don't want to watch the video. It'll make me sad.
I'm leaning toward owl abuse. Poor thing probably had has wings clipped (that's like humans with no legs) and swooshing around on a skateboard is the closest thing this lil angel will ever get to flying again.

Aw man - it's not that serious folks - animals often mimic human behaviours out of curiosity and in an effort to connect...this little guy probably saw that kid float in on the skateboard and thought: Hey! Monkeys can fly too but close to the ground! Cool! I'll try that!And he's probably a little disappointed he can't recreate it. And he's not tied down - he's just tied so he can't fly away and have to be rescued all over again when he tries to apply his lacking skateboarding skills to the roofs of cars...

And Hekki, I agree... I was torn on this one at first. I generally get really pissed off when people anthropomorphize wild animals and make them do ridiculous things, but I don't think that's going on here. That looks like a legitimate owl sanctuary where I'm sure he just takes in wounded or downed owls from the area and nurses and rehabilitates them. It's not like he's putting Alby in an outfit and having him perform every day at ten, noon, and four under the big top.
I wonder where one finds little owl-sized skateboards like that.
