Hmmm.

I speak better English than most people, black or white, and I have met plenty of country ass people from all hues of the color spectrum that speak bad English, so for those that think certain accents and dialects are designated to certain races are ignorant.

Not sure if this is aimed at people here but as far as the conversation we were having, that's exactly the opposite of what we were saying. Of course there shouldn't be a dialect designated to each race but stereotypes and basically stupid people have done just that, which is why Angel and myself seem to have similar experiences of people thinking we're of a different race due to how we speak.

@vidz, yeah I definitely found smarter people in college. I can see why the theory is that college friends are more likely to become your life-long friends. Mine are certainly more culturally educated than my high school friends.

I speak and write better than most people and when I was younger, I was criticized and belittled for "trying to act Ang Moh (Caucasian)". Luckily for me, I met much nicer, erudite and all around better people in college.

And to weigh in on the black hair issue, I fucking love it when black/brown women rock their natural fro and corkscrews. It really does look best, most of the time. It's ugliest when black/indian women try blonde or fucking ORANGE ironed hair. But speaking as an olive skinned Indian woman who once rocked permed blonde curls ( and received plenty of comments that I looked like "a white black" from people who thought it was a compliment) people should just do whatever the fuck they want.

Couldn't agree more with this. Make no mistake, my accent isn't me trying to be anything but me. That is how I was brought up to speak, my mum was born in Jamaica and she too speaks how I do. I don't understand some people's misconception that not speaking 'black' is somehow a disservice to your ethnicity, nor is how I do my hair.

White women are allowed the choice of having their hair curly, straight, blonde etc so why not else? My hair is relaxed as of the last 3 years but it was a late transition for me as I am fortunate to have nice hair in my family so didn't want to 'ruin' it but it's in a short style now which suits it better straight but I'm not out buying a long-ass weave and trying to be European. My skin will always give me away :P

OT: Agree about Aretha, she's lost weight and looks good for it.

O - in my case I'm not tryna be anything but me.
I keep my hair natural - mostly. And I've been known to rock a 'fro but it's hot. I hate being under it for more than one day...even that's hard. But, depending on the day, I like the look. Same with straitening - I don't love it all the time but I'll flat iron it now and then.

I have the weirdest accent...it's a little European and a little Newfie - when I try to talk "black" I sound fucking hilarious...that's why I like to type it so much:) I'm just learning how to braid now...I used to get my super ultra white friend to do it for me but she lives on the West Coast now:(
