Tina Fey's First Commercial Makes Me Miss Empty Lofts
This Mutual Savings Bank commercial from 1995 starring Tina Fey makes me remember the magical time when every lady comic on TV wore tapestry vests over white button-down shirts and EVERYTHING (I mean, EVERYTHING) was filmed in an empty loft. This is as if Lisa Loeb's "Stay" video crashed into Jenny Jones' wardrobe closet. Tapestry vests and empty lofts really need to make a comeback.

Clueless was my fashion inspiration back in '95 so I didn't have tapestry vests, but I do remember the lofts.
Yes, it is too true, people dressed like this, and 25-year-old women had their hair like this. So much can change in 15 short years. I am sure La Fey must have been thinking of this when she did the 1-900 commercial thing on 30 Rock. Too amazing. She really does look like a lesbian, haha. I hope her new was Bijoux in this commercial too, LOL.
LOL @ the loft. I too remember when the pinnacle of detatched coolness was filming in an empty exposed brick loft.

Where the hell was I in 1995! I was 25 at the time and I swear I never wore anything remotely similar to what Tina has on in this commercial. She may have been shopping at the Julia Louis-Dreyfus collection at JC Penney in 1995.

1995: jean skirts, cowboy boots and plaid shirts. I never owned a tapestry vest. But I DID spend a lot of time in empty lofts;p

She's great, as always, but the hair and clothes are horrific. As others here have said - kinda dikey too. Looks like she's has some dental work done to improve her teeth, but otherwise her face is the same. She looks great then and now. Love her!!!
Did she have some work done? Girl is straight out lesbionic in this video.
I'm far from being an expert on the subject, but wasn't that look very popular among dykes back then? She could be in an episode of "Ellen".
Snideychick sez:
I had tapestry loafers (a gift, but I requested them). I mostly wore black jeans and turtleneck sweaters in the 90s. I looked like I was in perpetual mourning. Can't stand to wear black now, unless it's jeans.
Also, I think Tina looks younger now...hope I look better in 15 years...don't see that happening, but one can wish.
Ugh, I hated the vest trend...I thought I looked much better in flannel baby doll dresses with Doc Martens...in hind sight that looked like shit too.
I had the tapestry BLAZER. And I wore it with a ruffly white shirt and a cameo brooch at the neck. With my Guess jeans I saved up to buy cause my momma thought they were highfalutin.
I think the 80's were worse fashion-wise.
LOL @ Annie Potts and Deputy Trudy Weigel
I think I was more into the chokers, baby doll dresses, and thigh highs ala 90210.

She looks younger now.
Hekki> I'm picturing lots of sweatshirts w. rhinestone strewn kitties, too. Am I right?
Man, I can't believe we ever wore this stuff, even worse that people I trying to bring that shit back into style now! I had a tapestry vest or two. Also had those puffy pirate shirts a la Seinfeld. In silk.

Does she have her scar in that? I can't see.
>>>>>>>>>>>>.
I think she got tyhat scar when she was a kid so she should. Maybe the lighting helps disguise it? Or maybe it's not as visible cuz she had more weight on.
I totally had that vest back then. It was so cool I hardly ever wanted to wear it because I was afraid I've fuck it up and never be able to wear it again. In hindsight, that would have been the best possible luck.

Were we really dressing that badly back in '95?

I wasn't! heh heh
Tina Fey is the hotness. Would I love to knock back a pint with her :D

Tina has already made so much fun of her early work there's nothing more we can add.

AHHHHAAAAAAHAAAAAHAAAAAHAAAAAA
Oh the 90's. Highschool, vests, and exposed brick lofts.
Amazing. She managed to condense the hilarity of her entire stint on SNL into 27 laugh-free seconds. She always struck me as a sort of Hillary Clinton without a sense of humor, and this clip reinforces that impression. Thanks Tina, for setting women in comedy back further than Margaret Cho's wildest delusions.

I had a SHINY green velvet vest around 1995, and I thought I was the coolest kid in school for it. =D

Love Tina Fey. She's gotten better looking as she's aged.

You can watch old "I Love Lucy"s from the 50's and see tapestry vests over white shirts. Lucy was sort of fashionable when she wanted to be.
if i did my math correctly she was 25 in this video...how is that haircut humanly possible at that age?
Ahhaha Hekki,
Where in Maine are you?
Umm...dude. Are you high?

Big empty loft for HSOTY.
Lemme tell you -- I'm in Maine right now and there is shit like tapestry vests floating around right NOW. And there is ZERO glamour here. My sister and I are like the hottest, thinnest, most fashionable chicks around. It's like the premise of "Hot in Cleveland"!!
One day I saw Tina Fey at the playground. I felt very Liz Lemon because I desperately wanted to talk to her but I didn't trust myself to be cool enough and not say something dorky so I ignored her. No one talked to her. But I could see that everyone noticed her and were giving her some space and privacy.
Dayum, except for the dated hair and clothes, she looks the same!
Looks like my girl Tina is channeling Deputy Trudy Weigel of Reno 911.
Is that real?

Maybe it's just the hair/outfit, but she's looking very "Annie Potts in Designing Women" to me.
That said, she's aged really well. She looks better now than then. Her face is much leaner.
I love Tina Fey, so I really hope this was a joke?? Like it wasn't supposed to be *that* awkward?? I'm confused...

It's pretty disturbing how accurate 30 Rock was with its depiction of her earlier work. See: Tina Fey (well..Liz Lemon) in phone sex line commercial.

MK's constant tug and pull relationship with Lisa Loeb's 'Stay' is part of the reason I love him so much.
