Dr. Temple Grandin, doctor of animal science, professor, author, inventor of the hug machine, autism activist, expert western wearer and the leading lady at last night's Emmys!
The Lost's Smoke Monster didn't add one new statute to the trophy shelf in his cave last night and the only magically golden thing that Conan O'Brien touched was his own hair, but not all was lost (pun definitely not intended) because Temple Grandin WON EVERYTHING! The HBO movie based on her life story brought 7 awards to their corner including one each for Best TV Movie, Best Actress (Claire Danes), Best Supporting Actor (David Strathairn) and Best Supporting Actress (Julia Ormond). And during almost every victory for the Temple Grandin movie, Temple herself pulled her ass out of her chair to throw air hugs and cheers at the winner. Temple was whoopin' that shit up!
I'm hoping that those 7 trophies will be melted down and made into a golden thread that will be used to weave a fancy new neck kerchief for Temple to wear.

I've had the distinct pleasure of meeting Temple twice, and yes, she truly is an inspiration to parents of children on the Autistic Spectrum. Her book THINKING IN PICTURES gives those of us without a clue about how an Autistic persons mind works a really clear understanding of their unique take on the world. I just picked up a copy of the TEMPLE DVD today and can't wait to see why it's garnered so many awards last night. As the Mom of 2 teenage boys with Aspergers Syndrome I feel ANY positive feed-back from the Hollywood community that relates to Autism is only going to help educate the folks out there who are ignorant about Autism, as I once was myself. On a side note, Claire Dane's husband Hugh Dancy played an Aspie in a great movie called ADAM that is now out on DVD as well. I remember when I read that she was cast to play Temple it seemed odd to me that they'd both be acting in similar roles, especially since depictions of Autistic individuals are quite rare in Film. And I thought nobody could ever top Dustin Hoffman's RAIN MAN?

Everyone should watch her documentary before they make a single comment about her. This woman not only has accomplished herself as respected in her field, overcame her disability, but she did so in an era that was unforgiving--- thanks in part to her supportive parents and her own tenacity.

Dr. Temple Grandin is an inspiration and awsome person all around. To achieve what she has in life with the huge obstacle of Austism in the way, is mind-blowing. Of course she isn't going to show up in a beaded, sequined gown. Anyone familiar with her story knows she has sensory issues with clothing. So happy she got her moment.***

It's funny I was laying in bed and turned on the tv at this very moment and saw this mess just as it was on and thought that was the person with autism they made the movie about. My younger brother who is in his 50's was recently officially diagnosed with Aspergers's, which is in the autism spectrum, after years of the family wondering what the fuck was wrong with him.
