Serene Branson Did Not Have A Stroke
The mysterious condition that grabbed onto Serene Branson's brain and caused her to spit out a scrambled Scrabble board has been solved. When the clip of the KCBS 2 reporter went viral on Sunday night, hos (including this ho) suddenly became WebMD graduates and used their expertise to say that she suffered a minor stroke, or a seizure, or an allergic reaction to Arcade Fire's performance. Serene allowed her doctor to talk about what fucked her up and he says that we're all wrong. It was a complex migraine. A migraine that scratches just like a stroke, but still a migraine. From The L.A. Times:
Serene Branson's garbled speech during a live Grammy broadcast last Sunday was not the result of a small stroke as many have speculated but was instead a symptom of a "complex migraine," according to her physician, Dr. Neil Martin, chief of neurosurgery at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.A complex migraine can mimic the symptoms of a stroke, with weakness, loss of vision and difficulty speaking, in addition to a headache. It is often mistaken for a stroke.
One theory about the cause of complex migraines is that blood vessels in the brain suddenly narrow, or spasm, and then dilate again. When they dilate, the headache develops. But during the spasm phase, certain parts of the brain receive too little blood, causing the stroke-like symptoms. The neurological symptoms are nearly always temporary.
Who knew? But now we know. KCBS2 has already said that Serene is fully recovered and is hoping to get back in front of the camera very soon.
And now that Lindsay Lohan knows what a complex migraine is, expect her to use this in the future. "I didn't type that! My Twitter had a complex migraine."

I have suffered from migraines since puberty. They were so bad during that time I was having one once per week. They have now tapered down to once a year, only coming back with frequency when I used birth control, so I had to stop. They are bad though, I get a blinding aura (like a flashlight shining into your eye), things lose their perception in space (so I cant read words because some letters float, disapper, etc), my extremities go numb, I vomit non-stop for hours...all on top of my brain feeling like it is going to explode. Wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.
But you don't have anything to say about the female reporter who was gang raped by those Egyptians?

I'm glad that it wasn't too serious. I too suffer from migraine headaches. They can do some weird shit, but I haven't had anything like this thankfully.
This and finding out that my 4th grade teacher(who is only 51 and in really good shape) had a stroke recently has me hoping that my brain doesn't breakdown.
Not like I'm a professional or anything...
But the same thing happened to me before I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. At first they thought it was migraines, then a stroke, then it was MS.
Had exactly the same thing happen to me a few years ago. Aphasia out of the blue, followed by freaky traveling numbness in my fingers, then scintillating scotoma. Totes thought I was stroking. But it was just a complex migraine.
And now I'll get the scintillating scotoma sometimes. Once I got yucky tunnel vision. No headache, though, and sometimes a groovy feeling follows, so it's kinda neat!
I also mistakenly thought she'd had a stroke, although she only displayed one of the three signs we're all supposed to look for (Can you smile? Can you hold your arms out? Can you say a sentence?)
Come to think of it, that last one can be a false indicator, because what if like pointandlaugh you said the wrong sentence?
Anyway, I'm glad they've determined what really happened. Now she can get the correct treatment and get back to her life...and we've all learned something.

I was out for a walk and did not know what was going on, and had to figure out how to get home with the scintillating scotoma in the main point of my vision - it looked like looking through a window with a big, clear fingerprint on it, in which the lines of the fingerprint were acting kaleidoscopically, with color and movement.
----------------------------------------------
Shit!! I get that sometimes. I've never had a migraine though. It's really scary, tends to happen when I'm very very sleep deprived so when my baby was little I got it alot. Do you know what causes it?? I've never heard of anyone having the same thing or looked into it, I just assumed I was a big freak...

Who are you calling silly cow?
So, this same shit happened to me a number of years ago after a long week of partying with the sweet nectar in Hawaii while I was supporting my mom running a marathon for cancer research (a girl's gotta party in Hawaii, what can I say). Anywho...I was walking back from the food court in the airport when I started seeing the "aura" you usually get with migraines and when I sat down my mom asked me if I was getting a migraine, to which I replied "I don't like that sweater" even though I thought I said "Yeah, this is annoying" . Because people wear sweaters in 90 degree humid heat, right? No.
It happened to me again a year later, but half my body went numb and I was saying all kinds if weird shit.
Anyway...I get why it happened, it just sucks that it happened on live TV!

I knew a woman who had horrible migraines all her life and also said she'd never had a vaginal O. (Or maybe she said I gave her a headache and sucked in bed--I forget now.)
A guy on the radio tonite was saying he suffered from migraines just before cumming when he and his wife were trying for their third kid. He said it was a stressful time for them. Maybe there's an O/migraine link?
Lastly, the ironically named Serene has been great for getting people to talk and learn about strokes and migraines.

Glad you were amused. Another odd benefit of migraine is the effect it has one's diet. Some foods which can trigger migraines are unhealthy for everyone, such as McDonald's. Avoiding the chemicals in processed foods can make a person a better cook, too. I cook from scratch or not at all.

And if I had to chose between a psychologist and a random bitch telling me of her own experiences, and trying use that as cold hard facts, on which one I'm going to go to for as fact, you bet your sweet fucking ass, I'm going to go with the guy with the "dr. in front of his name" But whatever... It's rather disturbing to hear that someone thinks this is a case of shared neurosis. Migraines and other neurological disorders are strongly affected by genetics.
I never get euphoric. Since vibrating panties were mentioned,I'd like to add a fun fact or two about migraines and sex.
1) Many migrainers are hypersensitive to stimuli. Some women can have migraines or orgasms VERY easily.
2) A particularly intense orgasm can trigger a migraine...or stop a migraine in its early stages.

Exactly.
@agirl, I hear what you're saying. Shit is fact. Only someone having to deal w/ them most of their lives can understand. All different ways a physiological system can run a migraine course, but there are across-the-board symptoms/triggers/physiological traits that will be inherent (whether by organic malfunction or TBI) in a true migraine/epileptic sufferer. Some peeps don't understand this. Ain't their fault. Many docs don't either. My dad doesn't get them. He thinks it's all in my (and my mom's and paternal grandfather's) head. Oh well.

Yes, strokes can cause aphasia, and so can migraines, and so can other things, including head injuries.
A child psychologist is not a neurologist - just because someone has a Dr. in front of his or her name does not make that person an expert on everything. A psychologist is not a medical doctor. Didn't know that, did you? No, or you wouldn't have given that person as the source of your expert information.
Wikipedia is an good source of basic information on a subject and it almost always links to other even better sources. It can have inaccuracies, which is why other sources should also be used, but info is not automatically to be dismissed because it came from Wikipedia. How do I know this? I have a Master's degree in information science and teach an information literacy class at a local university, instructing students on how to do research and cite their sources in their research papers.
I have had migraines my whole life, and I can tell from what you are writing that you don't know anything about migraines, except what one person told you the other day.
It is childish to accuse someone of being defensive when they correct you, in an effort to silence that person. What you wrote was simply inaccurate.
You may now start writing your angry, indignant reply. Don't forget the curses. That is all.

If I'm getting a migraine combined with an attack of trigeminal neuralgia, I have trouble with nouns. I had very invasive surgery for TN,which failed to cure it. However,it had the odd effect of improving the migraines and aggravated the genticulous neuralgia on the same side of my head.

LOL at "...bot 500 server error" omg lord KNOWS It def feels like a "server error"! Dead on, Manimal5!
The other thing, and this is some shit true migraine/epilepsy peeps have (migraines are in the same family as epilepsy) is a semi-"euphoric" feeling at immediate onset. And this shit right here explains why peeps about to suffer some shit can actually smile/joke, then look peaceful as if errythang is ok, then fucking get hammered w/ aphasia/vision loss/throbs, etc.

Whatever it was it could happen again...I'm just not buying the migraine thing though.
As strange as it may sound, I'm glad this happened to SB while she was on the air. Any neurologist she visits will be less likely to brush her off. SB needs one.
I am not a medical professional- don't even have a Girl Scout first aid badge- but experience tells me that a person with complicated migraines is likely to have other neurological or cardiovascular disorders as well. Nasty medication side effects just add to the general misery. I hope the rest of the Dlisted Migraine Team will be well without developing other conditions.
Oliver Sachs' book is excellent. Oh, and sorry I whined. :D
I call bullshit. She wants to remain a reporter and the doctors are helping to "minimize" what happened to her. Migraine sounds so much more"light and friendly" than STROKE or DRUGS
I actually had this kind of migraine years ago when I was at work and it scared the hell out of me along with a co-worker who called 911. I was talking one minute and then everything became jumbled.
Call it what you will....I still would have gone right to the hospital....
I'm glad she didn't have a stroke, but I'll bet as a result she won't get a lot of live air time in the future. She'll definitely be a recorded appearance.

Oh, I feel for you. My daughter had the OCD. The symptoms don't bother her too much anymore, but it used to drive me nuts. Her thing was counting odd/even words and numbers. She also had this thing about seeing on TV a blonde man dating a dark haired woman (that was good). I actually thought she was autistic as a baby and I do think there's a link between schizophrenia and Aspergers. And the meds. She's been on probably everyone there is, but she's finally on something fairly good. My next step is to do vitamin b therapy on her. I hate that she's on all that medicine, and she has to get her blood checked once a month to make sure her liver is functioning okay. It totally sucks, and what makes it worse is that people don't understand. Just like with this Serene girl people still think she was faking it. Any idiot can tell she's not. The poor girl looks terrified and confused.

I completely feel for you. I knew something was wrong with me, when I was a young child, but I didn't say anything because I didn't know what was going on, as a teenager, my parential unit, thought i was just angry/mean, going through the typical teenage stuff, until one day when I was 17 I remember not being able to sleep because I was so depressed and in a black hole, anyway, the show was a documentary about adolescents/teens with mental/chemical disorders/imbalances/illness whatever wording you wanna use,and I realized I could no longer deal with it on my own. The meds, like you're daughter, I've been through so many. I was pretty much a guinea pig for new meds at the time, it reaaaalllly messed with my whole body mentally and physically. My eyes were blurry,i blew up to about 250 pounds (thankfully i lost the weight),jittery like I drank 20 shots of expresso. On a few occassions it made me so depressed, which is another you really need to watch out for. Those meds can make it worse. Also they can cause tardive dsykensia. And like your daughter, I have to get my blood checked to make sure everything is okay. Vitamin B, is great. I remember when I started taking it, i felt so calm. They also have cognitive behavioral therapy. It's defintely a rough journey. Stress basically triggers mine. And I go into full blown reptitive mode and get bad panic attacks. I truly truly do feel for you and your daughter.
And yea, I completely agree, I think going through something like this, or what that news anchor had to go through, and then to be called faking it, or drunk, or being nervous...I mean, I think the worse part aside from the problem itself, is people goofing it off. That hurts so much more. I don't care if you don't understand what I'm going through, but don't rub salt in the wound and think I'm making it up.

Aphasia is not *causing* the speech problems, the word "aphasia" *means* acquired language difficulties or impairment (as opposed to those someone may be born with) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aphasia
If she's had migraines before of this type, a trip to the ER is not necessary.

Actually, Strokes can cause(and are KNOWN) Aphasia, or temporary like symptons. My grandmother's father had a stroke, that left his speech jumbled like hers(but on a permanent and more sevre scale), and no one knew what he was saying. If you don't know that a fuckin stroke can mess up your speech or cause parayalsis you clearly have been hiding under a rock...And I'm sorry, but I'm going to go with a man who's been a licensed psychologist who specializes in child psychology, and now is a psychology professor over wikipedia.
And secondly the fact that her doctor wasn't on the scene and it was an EMT's who are not trained to diagnose either of those things, then yes, genius, she should have went to a fucking hospital. Stable vital signs mean nothing. Even a low-level hospital technician would have recommended her go to an emergency room to get checked out. FFS.
Thanks. Have a good one,OH and stop being so defensive about your migraine, no one's doubting it or the shit you have to go through with it..
