Yeah well, fuck everybody who supports horse racing just the same. Brits, Yanks, Slavs, whatever!!

Oh and London is stylish, alright, but everyone there is from somewhere else.

One beauty part of America? Being able to drive, thus avoiding getting your ass beat every 5 minutes whilst walking down the street. The US might have lots of gun crime, but the Brits kill each other with their bare hands.

I like both sides of the pond, though.

I am American, my mother is British and I have spent a great deal of time in England (half my childhood). I know from real-life experience what British people can be like - I'm not judging from just these photos.

The British love to mock other countries, and they especially love to pick on Americans, saying we are all classless, trashy, fat and stupid. You hear it all the time on British shows, usually followed by roaring laughter from the audience (ever watch "Top Gear"?) Some folks may still buy the lie that England is peopled only with the gentried, landed, titled, "horsey type," or that the British are just genetically classier than the rest of us mongrels - but the truth is that England has as much trash as anywhere else. They can only argue that their trashiness is OLDER.

So when I see stuff like this, I can't help but throw some salt on. The Brits don't know from class. And, as another poster said, the have the WORST style, even the wealthy.

I don't know what your idea of style is, jeans trainers and a tshirt, the usual American tourist look? The British have style, a lot more than other countries. Go to any big city especially London and it's full of stylish, funkily dressed people, especially young people.

At the end of the day we don't claim to be perfect, we know we have our chavs and scum, we're not denying it, infact we spend most of our time moaning about all the things wrong with our country, just look at our newspapers if you don't believe me. Yeah we take the piss out of other countries sometimes, but what country doesn't? I don't know where people have got this idea from that we are different to other countries and don't have our "trash", but we're not the ones who are saying this.

Don't get me wrong, Slovakia has a lot of gypsies too, and they are not particularly liked by the common folk. I was talking about tall, svelte girls in the City primarily. If you go into the villages, they tend to be chubbier. Although (and I go there at least 5 weeks per year) I have never come across an obese young person, chubby or fat, a handful of times. Not ALL are tall and svelte, but the young majority, in the main city, are.

Thing is in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, in the cities, people walk EVERYWHERE. They must walk at least 10 km a day if none. Sweets are not as sugary, most people cook and eat homemade cuisine, the restaurants are too expensive for the majority. There are also those stand by stands (for lack of a better word) selling ''oplacki'' which are pancake like fried potatoes or hot dogs and things like that and McDonald's has recently been introduced. But again, it's ridiculously expensive (more so than in America) and by their wages it would be like eating in a quality restaurant, so mainly tourists go there.

Oh yeah, they are BIG on sports. Every kid plays a sport, either hockey, football (soccer), tennis, swimming, skiing. But not jogging. Last year, when I went out for a jog in the park, in the Czech Rep. as well, people would look at me as if i was out of my mind, like what was i running from? i got a lot of smirks.

Preaching to the converted, I hate how snobby the English can be about our crappy little island (which I love, don't get me wrong) but we like to postulate as better than Americans, more refined, more old school if you will. We have a few things we can be proud of, our universities, our healthcare system, and we are in the process of decimating everything that we have worked for and turning ourselves into the 51st state.

The truth is the UK has some classy, refined, well educated people with old school taste. We also have whole cities that lost all their employment opportunities when Thatcher destroyed British manufacturing, high poverty levels, shit loads of drugs, crime etc. The English still like to think that they are the centre of an Empire and can't accept that globally we are now insignificant.

The only criticism I will slap back is that the British have no style. I'd invite anyone to come hang out in east London where I live and say that again. In most of the world, America included, blue jeans and a T-shirt is considered a look. Kids in the big cities in the UK poor their heart and soul into their outfits and whole areas are one big catwalk. You can't make judgements on English style from chavs; UK style, in particular London, is quirky, mismatched and often retro, people from other countries don't often get it because the look is deliberately unkempt.

Just add to the whole "Polish women caused this mess" debate, I have to say as an English woman living in an area with a fair few Eastern European women, this image of them all being tall, beautiful, well dressed and glamourous is completely untrue. Some are, but most just look and dress like normal people or like gyspies/chavs. I don't think they caused the whole fake tan and tacky dress thing though, that's quite ridiculous to suggest that.

kidding. It's hard to generalize and I've never been to the UK but Eastern Europeans or Central Europeans tend to be lean, and tall. I come from a family of athletes from my fathers side. I have an athletic body type, medium boned, 5'4 (mothers side) and between 119-121 lbs last time I checked (last week when I felt at my thinnest, in the morning, before breakfast, nekkid, depending on how I position the scale). This is why I don't weigh myself often. But the girls in Slovakia are usually svelte, and taller than I am.

I'm not sure that's true. I can't think of a similar event in the US--our horse races don't produce such finery or debauchery. Part of it might be that we imagine the British are still more refined than we are, when in fact some are not.

This is a HORRIFIC RACE! I just read on the Daily Mail that each year it is UNUSUAL for NO HORSES TO DIE. WTF kind of 'fun sport' is this?! This race is about horses being fored to run and jump huge obstacles with pine branches and water on the other side for FOUR HOURS! Several horses die each year, tons of shocking crashes and falls. It's absolute fuckery while slags like these pictures get drunk and show off thier ho moves. UGH! Bring on the end of the world already.

There has been great debate in the middle class media as to where the word chav comes from. Most commonly thought to derive from the cockney/working class Londoner word chavvy, which means child. So chav probably originated as a slur to deride the people who used it. I guess the US equivalent might be trailer trash, but it means more than being poor, it is a snobby word that derides someone's class and taste. Someone can become very rich and still be a chav, they wear expensive but still tasteless clothes, are generally uneducated and act with little class. Nuevo riche I guess could also apply, but most chavs would be poor and living on estates (projects). But it is also a style of dress, driving certain cars, even the type of dog you might own. Lily Allen, when she first started, dressed like an ironic chav with her trainer and dress ensemble, and big fake gold jewellery.

Pikey, in it's purest form, means gypsy, but it is now used interchangeably with chav, also townie means similar.

You could try out: knobjockey, bollocks, wanker and rasclaat in front of your mum, to start off with :)

I was just in East Berlin a month or 2 ago, and although Germany is now a fully western country with booming economy, it hasn't fully emerged from being ripped in 2. The Berlin wall was in all but the youngest peoples living memory and that shit leaves scars. You're right that people do still refer to Czechoslovakia and Yoguslavia (can't spell that) myself included sometimes, but that's just laziness. The left overs from communism are real and still exist and divide Europe, although things are changing slowly as more countries are allowed into the EU.

That is true (in that case Rovex I owe you an apology for the geographical inept part). Yes, the countries have a hard time getting back on their feet. Crime has risen in SVK, everything is expensive, unemployment is high, the politics are split, no one trusts any party. It will take years before they get the economy flowing. It's still better than with the communist regime, but it's difficult to adjust to the change. We're part of the UN and have the Euro, but it's not making getting the country back on its feet any faster. Slowly, very slowly.

It's still beautiful, magnificent castles back from the 13th century (that was in the Czech Republic), but in SVK too, every city has one, some untocuhed with centuries gone by, gorgeous museums, old cathedrals with magnificent baroque art, the high tatra mountains...

There may be two ways to look at it. I take the geographical point of view. When I hear Eastern Europe, I do not think of Austria, Hungary, Slovakia or Poland.

The Soviet regime is long gone. It's like when people still say Czechoslovakia, when since 1993 it has peacefully separated and become two different Republics - The Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic.

The term Eastern Europe really refers to countries that made up the old Soviet bloc, rather than necessarily being geographically exactly to the east, so Rovex, whilst being misinformed on virtually everything else, is correct in calling Poland part of Eastern Europe.

@ Allessandra - yes, it was only Eastern Germany, I did not specify. Austria is not Eastern Europe, along with Slovakia which, if you look at the map of Europe, is at the heart of Europe, the capital being Bratislava (where I was born) is about 10 km from Austria. I once walked over from Bratislava to Austria to see a Rolling Stones concert. The correct definition would be ''Central Europe.'' I said the"dreaded Eastern European Countries'' on Rovex's behalf since he called Poland an Eastern European Country. It's located North of Slovakia, still in Central Europe.

BTW, Rovex that is why I assumed you hadn't stepped foot outside your country. Besides being geographically inept, you ARE racist.
