I definitely think entitlements should stay, it's the ones using it generation after generation that bother me. I worked with a girl who had five kids from five fathers and she was on everything. No child support, all five ducked out and quit jobs once the cash was deducted from their checks. This girl FINALLY said fuck it, went to school and now is off everything and supporting herself. Two generations behind her are still on entitlements. The system can work if the person wants to help themselves. Quite honestly, she is a much happier person earning her money and not taking it.

my only concern with welfare to work is that I have seen that the children end up suffering the most, because their mothers have to work so they can't raise them. dad sure as hell isn't in the picture. even if mom is a lazy welfare queen, every kid needs to be raised by his/her mother.
unfortunately, we have indigents in our society. people who are physically or mentally unable or unwilling to support themselves. it is what it is. no one likes welfare queens but it seems as though we place undue focus on them, as though if we got rid of every welfare queen, we would become a superpower. think about it...how many people live in this capitalistic society that don't want to have a purpose, don't want the opportunity to make money, grow and live to a higher standard? not to mention, welfare queens, more often than not, beget welfare queens. it takes a lot to reverse that vicious cycle, more than just pulling the rug out from under them. it's like trying to undo the cancer of institutionalized racism in this country. we see it's been centuries and it's still permeating the society.

EvilShoe, congrats on working and studying while being a single mom. My husband is away on business so I'm a single mom too right now, and it's rough as hell, so I feel your pain.
I wonder if there are jobs in your field, but they may happen to be in other states. if so, I wonder if you may have the opportunity or ability to move to another state. I did, and although I don't particularly care for this state, it was the best thing I ever did. if not, see if your skills are transferrable to another, similar field. that happened to me as well back during the last recession. hopefully, things will pick back up by the time you graduate. good luck!

That means 50% of us work and pay taxes so the other 50% can suck of the government tit. Greece, Spain, Portugal and Ireland are now bankrupt because of their entitlement programs.
you realize people are receiving those benefits because the economy is in the tank, right? most people would prefer to work. folks act like government assistance is some license to eat shrimp and steak and lounge by the pool. government assistance provides you with enough money to not die in the street. I know this from when I was on unemployment *shudder* knock on wood, I will never have need of those services again.
taking away those programs from those who need it is not an answer because you are addressing the symptom, not the problem. it's like "curing" a cold by taking NyQuil. addressing the problem requires a thriving economy with plenty of middle class opportunity, health education, support for families. it's not about catering to the wealthy because as we have seen, trickle down economics is bullshit. widening the gap between the haves and the have nots is bullshit.
President Obama has addressed all these issues but is not given credit because we're a Top Ramen society and can't deal with sacrifice. we were rescued from a catastrophic economic freefall. folks don't even realize we were two steps away from a 1927-level epic depression that would make this recession look like Supermarket Sweep. prosecuting two wars on credit cards, spending a billion dollars a day for several years, and not requiring any sacrifice from the people, plus a fast and furious Wall Street that bet our futures and lost, tends to do that. but unless that's turned around in two seconds, again, without any level of sacrifice, introspection and subsequent societal reform, then the President has done nothing, right?
we have deep issues that cannot be resolved by gutting Medicare and Social Security. we need those programs, and gutting them causes suffering among the least fortunate and more vulnerable. we need discipline. we need education. we need better health outcomes. innovation is the means by which a country becomes a superpower, and we cannot innovate when everyone is sick and stupid. but folks would rather blame welfare queens and President Obama for the ineptitude of decades, that happened to choose here and now to bear fruit. it's sickening.

I'm glad you have your business, that is awesome. I'm in school now so I can pop in and out, I usually study 12 hours a day. :( I have five classes.
About entitlements, I found it very weird here in Florida that it was mandatory to apply for SNAP, Welfare, Emergency cash and all of those in order to be on unemployment. I had no choice but to apply, no opt out. Same for gas cards for the schooling. I don't need all that. My degree is two-thirds done and paid for by me (out of pocket, no loans) and being a single mom they flagged me to be in the WIA program because there was no work in my field so they said I had to retrain or lose unemployment. I've never been on unemployment before so I don't know if that is the norm.
I see gladyslove has been busy watching Fox News again. Will those half-wits ever get anything right? Hey, did you and Glambert have your Big Gay Wedding yet? You can get a good deal on anal beads at Pieholes Are Us.

I have my own business so I can't be here all day or else work doens't get done. But if I wanted to be here on this site, I could be because it would be my own business that I am not working for, nor getting paid... I'm all for helping the underpriviledged. But it seems like the underpriviledged is growing to include the middle class. And it also seems to me, the more you do for someone, the less they do for themselves. I learned this long ago, and it still is true today. How many of you have given your kids something awesome or have been given something awesome like a car, and how many have appreciated that car as much as the car one buys for themselves? How is the car bought with hard earned money cared for compared to a gift? Of course, I am speaking in general. But I think this regime is slowly, like a frog in hot water, making people believe that they "need" the govt. watching out for them, doing for them. It's become a new business for those fat cats in govt. "take care of everyone," even though we can't take care of anyone as good as we would take care of our own. It's all smoke and mirrors. I for one will not be on a rooftop waiting for the govt. to come save me. I have a plan A. and if Plan A fails, and I've gone through plans ....F, then maybe I will wait for the govt to come get me off the roof, to supply my much needed healthcare, to "get my fair share."

I'm on unemployment now, there are no jobs in my field. Each week it's the same jobs recycled with new post dates. I even mentioned that to my WIA rep that I felt I was applying for the same jobs over and over again. She said, "you are". The unemployment number is way off. My WIA (Workforce Investment Act) rep said based on 9% she should only have 20-30 clients (same for her co-workers) and she has 347 currently.
you're in FL, right? I believe the problem is more acute there, as was the sub-prime mortgage crisis. I'm sure unemployment is pretty bad in NV as well.
also, I don't presume to know your field of expertise, but there are some that are prone to nadirs like this in a recession. I fell victim to the 9/11 recession because of this. for me, I got into another field partly because of serendipity and partly because I never wanted to experience the pain of a layoff again...so I ended up making a lot of sacrifices to get ahead, like commuting 200 miles/day, but I was in a position to do that at the time (single, no kids).
