i am vocal coaching a high school R&b band and trying to get them to protect their voices early on in their lives. one problem is, when you are young, you don;t believe old folks and think you are invincible, and that you can "belt" forever and not damage your vocal cords.
hence, throat surgery at 24,
i suspect that self-care hasn't been the highest thing on Adele's list in her life so far - it isnt for a lot of artist types - but hopefully she's with people who will encourage her to take proper care of herself all-around, especially now that she's a mom.

Hi there:):) I sort of think it is the way she sings that might have injured her vocals. I remember a music teacher talking about "head tone"
alot. She doesn't seem have that alot. Still I do enjoy her music and a powerful voice. Did not realize Whitney sang from the throat. Today, Mr and I were at Big Lots (FU to anyone snubbing that) and they were playing one of Mariah Carey's famous songs. One of them where she squealed out several octaves. God, I hated that and I remember people going on and on about her range. whatever. But back to the voice.
Julia Andrews voice was ruined from surgery on her vocal chords or something in her throat.

That's a great question Pushy and I'll be honest I'm not sure. You're definately more apt to strain your voice not singing from the diaphragm no doubt but even some of the best singers that are trained to sing from the diaphragm have had vocal issues. I think Elton John had his voice issues in the 90s after obviously many years of singing. In Adele's case I would think simply singing back to back to back nights in such a short period of time would take a toll on her voice either way from simple over use. You'll often see singers on tour sing let the back-up singers hit those high notes or they'll hold the lower note not because they can't hit them but simply because they need to conserve their voice over a long tour schedual.

Whitney Houston sang more from her throat than diaphragm. She was given instruction to correct her form but didn't pursue that training. Consequently, between the drugs and age, she "lost" her voice for the most part.
The best example: Elvis. No one had a harder schedule on the road. One show every night in a different city for weeks. He sang from the diaphragm and he had a 3 octave range which by any standard is exceptional. He was able to do this for years which is even more remarkable.
Adele is only 24. It will be interesting to see how long her career will be. Will she have a long career like a Celine or a Tom Jones or a very short one?
Congrats to her I guess. Hopefully she doesn't stay happy for too long or she will have nothing to write songs about. LOL.

She can take time off if she wants, record when she feels like it, and tour when the spirit moves her.
