I took an ASL class and you would get marked off if you didn't have the appropriate facial expression. Facial expressions are hugely important, it is like inflection for the hearing.

Those kinds of facial expressions are part of sign language. Sign language uses the hands, face, body and the space around the body to communicate. (I've studied ASL for almost 10 years)

Thanks for explaining that agirl and EH. I studied ASL for about a year. I remember being flabbergasted on my first day of class that a DEAF person was teaching the class. Having had NO ASL knowledge at all, I couldn't undertand how I ws going to learn from a deaf person, (I know, what a dumbass) but the teacher was an incredible communicator, and I felt at ease within the first 5 minutes. Facial expressions are a key part of ASL.
Do what I did - Turn the sound off and watch that shit while you're listening to "Vogue". Magic.
Great choice for HSOTD! I loved watching her.
Hope all my peeps in NY/NJ and anywhere else that got hit by Sandy the Bitch are OK.

ETA: actually, ASL is pretty fascinating. It's logical and sometimes funny. You can make Freudian slips and misspeak, just as in spoken language.

The reason sign language interpreters get so expressive is because besides expressing words, they have to also convey emotion and mood when signing since that can often be lost in the process.....still pretty funny though....
