MC Hammer & Psy: Together At Last
One big giant LOL White People convention happened at the end of the AMAs last night when K-Pop superstar Psy and the ghost of Justin Bieber's future, MC Hammer, joined forces for a performance that took me slightly higher. Every time I hear that Gangnam Style song, it feels like my last nerve is getting stabbed repeatedly with a sequined knife, but this performance still took me higher for two reasons: 1) MC Hammer's bedazzled bandanna looks like a tiara straight out of the chola prom and; b) the awkward audience reactions to this shit. When you mix together Psy and a little bit of MC Hammer, it makes people bust out their sweetest and hottest neck bobs. I know Psy and Hammer are doing it right, because I screamed "Git it, grandpa" (at the 4:16 mark) at least twice.
The only thing missing from this is a cameo from Los del Río. Then this really would've been a wedding reception's wet dream come true.

My daughter has become friends with several of the foreign exchange students at her school this year. Two are from Korea, one is from Seoul. I guess Seoul is divided into districts and she is from the district or Gangnam
, as is Psy. The song is about their district! She said it is so very quiet by day, but at night the place just EXPODES! Clubs out the ying yang, open til the wee hrs and CRAZY.
He's been HUGE in K-pop over there for yrs. This video went viral on YouTube and that's how he ended up on everything here.
It's really cute, when she's with us and the song comes on the radio she sings the Korean parts for us. Sweet kid. =)

Psy is actually an accomplished and well-respected performer in S. Korea. He is known for having thoughtful, philosophical lyrics that often comment on social issues in the Korean culture.. This song can't really be understood unless you know the subtleties of the Korean language and culture, but Gangham is a very affluent upscale district in Seoul where the wealthy live. "Oppa" is a word that is hard to translate, but basically, it is an older, wealthy man (who is generally a much sought-after by younger females). In this song, he's whispering into young girls' ears "oppa", and the song speaks to that social nuance. Anyway, to us - Americans - it's a silly song (which is why it's such a hit, I think,) but underneath it, it's a brilliant social commentary.
I heard someone say that he is kind of like the Korean "Eminem". He's been around for a long time, has a lot of artistic talent, and most of the music that he produces is taken seriously and fairly critically acclaimed. Not sure how long he'll stay on the world stage, but he enjoys quite a bit of success and respect in Korea.

ITA Gotta give it to Hammer, the old guy can move!!! He put the audience to shame, even the young ones. I would also like to see a duo of Gangnam style with Frankie goes to Hollywood. Maybe it was the light show but it reminded me of "Frankie Says Relax". Loved the dancers dead on the floor at the end, reminded me of MJ's Smooth Criminal live act.

I'm a curious geek and I wanted to see an English translation of the lyrics so I googled the song. Perhaps the lyrics lose something in translation because they didn't make sense to me. However, I did learn that Psy is a well established South Korean entertainer--enough so that his "15 minutes" would apply only to his US exposure. The song itself is a social commentary on wannabe Real Housewife types. Gangnam is apparently the Beverly Hills of South Korea. Who knew?
I didn't watch the shiteous AMAs, but I did watch this performance this morning, and I'm not gonna, lie, I absolutely fucking loved it! I love PSY performing with Madonna last week too. I think it's all in good fun and was really cute.
